I got out in the woods for this one because it’s the only place I can really think straight with all the noise lately—emails, news, politics, and everything swirling around drones right now. The last 12 months have made this hobby feel ultra-political, and I wanted to talk directly to you about what “flying a drone in the US” looks like with new proposals like Senate Bill S.3481 and the bigger enforcement conversation (FAA, FCC, restricted imports, and all of it). Here’s my honest take after years in this industry: for most recreational pilots, this probably won’t change your day-to-day flying as much as people fear. The intent is enforcement for repeat offenders and people doing blatantly reckless stuff—like intentionally flying in security zones, messing with law enforcement operations, or pulling the tiger’s tail around prisons, military bases, or moving TFRs. If you’re doing the basics—checking maps/TFRs, staying out of obvious hot zones, and staying compliant (Remote ID/registration if applicable)—you’re far more likely to be struck by lightning than to get wrapped up in a federal case. Where it gets complicated is commercial work in metro areas, because you can have clearance and still deal with moving security zones you didn’t know about. Bottom line: I’m not telling you to quit. Drones and FPV are our happy place, and we’re going to keep flying—just a little smarter.
