Trek 820 Rebuild and Restomod – From Rusty Garage Bike to Custom 1x9

This 2010 Trek 820 was forgotten in a garage for nearly a decade — until now. Once loved, it was left behind after a flat tire and slowly slipped into the shadows, collecting dust and memories. But instead of letting it fade away, I decided to rebuild and restomod this entry-level mountain bike into something entirely new. This isn’t just a basic tune-up. I stripped it to the frame, gave it a fresh coat of gloss black paint with red accents, swapped out the old freewheel drivetrain, and rebuilt the rear wheel to handle a modern 1x9 cassette. New suspension fork, new cockpit, new brakes, and a drivetrain overhaul brought it back to life. Along the way, I: 🚴‍♂️ Replaced the seized front fork 🚴‍♂️ Converted the drivetrain to a 1x9 with Alivio derailleur and shifter. 🚴‍♂️ Hand-laced and trued a rear freehub wheel 🚴‍♂️ Painted the frame using rattle can primer, Krylon Fusion color, and Rustoleum clear 🚴‍♂️ Installed new V-brakes, cockpit, tires, and budget upgrades that work surprisingly well This Trek 820 was never meant to sit in the back of a garage forever.
