This old Giant hybrid bike sat abandoned in our bike shop for over a year… and everybody noticed the giant couch-sized saddle. But nobody noticed the thing that actually destroyed the bike. What started as a simple “loose pedals” repair turned into something much worse when I discovered a massive crack near the bottom bracket and chainstay. Living in Michigan, I’ve got a pretty good theory: water got inside the frame, froze during winter, and literally split the bike apart from the inside. In this video I tear down the bike, explain what likely happened, salvage the usable parts, and talk about why leaving bikes outside can quietly destroy them over time. If you’ve ever wondered: Can freezing weather crack a bike frame? What happens when water gets inside a bike frame? Are old hybrid bikes worth saving? What bike parts are worth salvaging? Why do bottom brackets fail? …this one’s for you.
