I’m kicking off the Specialish MTB build by repainting my son’s beat-up Diamondback Overdrive 29er frame and adding custom decals before rebuilding the bike. This mountain bike has been on the DIY Mountain Bike channel before, back when I converted it to an inexpensive 1x drivetrain. I was planning to keep it as a test bike for experiments, upgrades, and future videos — but my son called from Chicago and asked if he could take his old bike back. So the plan changed. In this video, I repair the scratched and gouged frame, file down bad chainstay damage, scuff sand the paint, fill deeper marks with Bondo, spray primer, wet sand, apply a rattle-can top coat, and finally install the custom Specialish decals. This is not meant to be a perfect show-bike repaint. It’s a practical, budget-minded mountain bike transformation to give an old frame a second life. The finished bike will be rebuilt with a 1x Microshift Advent drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, a 34-tooth chainring, and a gray, black, and blue theme. If you like budget mountain bike rebuilds, old MTB transformations, rattle-can bike paint projects, and real-world DIY bike repairs, this series is for you.
