I Saved a “Totaled” Trek for $0 (The $421.22 Truth)

Is it worth rebuilding a cheap mountain bike? When my local bike shop gave me this abandoned 2012 Trek 820, it came with a repair quote that would stop most people in their tracks: $421.22.
