In this video I’m comparing the MPC Sample to the SP-404MKII, and I’m not here to crown a “winner.” I just like talking about drum machines, so I broke it down by categories: portability, versatility, convenience, sequencer, third-party support, song playback, effects, and MIDI. If you’re into sampling, daily beatmaking, and figuring out what actually fits your workflow, this is the kind of comparison that matters more than specs on paper. For portability, I lean MPC Sample because it has a built-in battery solution and I don’t have to mess with adapters. For versatility and convenience, I give it to the SP-404MKII—more inputs/outputs, fewer adapter problems, real-time effects, vocoder, even DJ-style use, plus it can auto-load projects and it’s easy to drag songs and samples on and keep them there. Sequencer-wise, I like the MPC Sample for simplicity and speed when I’m trying to grab a sound and get moving, even though both can warp. Third-party support and song playback also favor the SP, especially with Koala Sampler and Serato compatibility and the way people run full tracks live. Effects and MIDI flexibility lean SP for me too, mainly because it’s faster to manipulate effects in real time without breaking the flow.
