In this video I’m going through the MPC Sample Pad FX and specifically the 16 pad effects. I load up a kit with a beat and just start auditioning everything in real time—beat repeat, reverse stepper, delay, reverb, ring mod, lo-fi (bit reduction), color modes (cassette/flutter/tube/vinyl/saturation), granularizer, comb filter, filters (LP/HP/band-pass), half speed, chorus, flanger, and phaser. The big thing to understand is these pad effects are all-encompassing: they hit the whole kit, not a separate send or bus, so you can think of them like master-bus style performance FX. I also talk about how pressure and latch work, because a lot of these effects are tied to how hard you press the pad—often acting like a wet/dry control or changing a key parameter (like ring mod frequency). You can latch an effect once you find the pressure sweet spot, and you can even stack up to four effects at once (I don’t know the exact routing order, but it’s definitely fun for performance). My main critique is flexibility: some effects feel a little tricky to keep perfectly in sync, especially when I’m doing “outside the realm” stuff like a 3/4 beat on a device that doesn’t really do 3/4 time signatures. Overall though, I’m not mad at them—these are solid tools, and I want to hear how you’re using them.
