About This Video

In this video I’m showing you how I record melodies on the MPC Sample using a simple sample and the built-in workflow. I start with a sample loaded up in Main mode and I make sure it’s tuned to the key of the beat I already did on the unit. From there, the whole trick is hitting 16 Levels so the pads turn into a playable “melody” layout, then using the Tune button to land the sample exactly where you want it pitch-wise. Before I record anything, I like to rehearse the melody on the pads first—because on this box, you’ve gotta be intentional. I also talk about the real-world limitations: you don’t get set scales, so you’ve got to be creative with the limitations, and you’re not really doing chords the normal way. You can run into polyphony limits too, but I explain a workaround—copy the program/sample and build out additional notes (it’s a little long-winded, but it can be done). After that, I jump back to the sequence page, show how Main mode works alongside sequencing, and you can blend the melodic sample into the mix with the slider. I haven’t fully tested MIDI yet, but we’ll get into that—because right now, bus-powered controllers like the MPK Mini-style stuff aren’t just plug-and-play on this.
