About This Video

In this live session I knocked out Beat 82 and Beat 83 for my #100beatchallenge, and I kept it super real about the process. I’m on the MPC (MPC61) cooking up quick ideas, letting the groove “marinate,” and building the beat the way I actually do it—simple drums, a melody that rides, then bringing the 808 in when it’s time. I even threw parts into Song Mode so I could loop sections and make the 808 pattern longer than the basic sequence. The big takeaway: some of the simplest beats I’ve made get the most love, so stop trying to be “amazing” every time and just make something. I also talked about the whole “is it AI?” conversation while I’m literally playing and programming the parts in real time. Quantize can make stuff feel robotic, but that doesn’t mean it’s AI—sometimes it’s just tight timing. For Beat 83 I leaned into that older, sequenced sound-module era vibe (because that’s how a lot of those records were made), and I even started flirting with a Darkchild/Tony Braxton type direction while reminding y’all I need to get out of my comfort zone (I always end up in E♭). I’m close to the finish line—17 beats left—and I’m thinking about doing a mini-marathon stream to close this challenge out.
