I took a trip to Tempe, Arizona for PressConf and decided to kick things off in the most “what is this timeline?” way possible: I tried Waymo, the fully autonomous Google robot car, to go get In-N-Out. The whole experience was as weird as I hoped it would be—request the ride, it pulls up with my initials, I hit unlock, the handles pop out, and then… you’re just in a car with no driver. It felt clean, quiet, and honestly more premium than I expected, even if it did brake a little hard and park a bit “rough around the edges.” Then PressConf started, and this event is different. You can’t record sessions or quote speakers without permission, which creates a space for way more honest conversations about the WordPress economy—hosts, plugin businesses, and where the industry is headed. My big takeaways were that WordPress is at a pivotal crossroads (commercial vs open source direction), and that we desperately need more young contributors and adopters. On day two, the talks hit me on a personal level: I don’t value my time enough, and AI is pushing companies to ship faster than ever—something I need to lean into as a creator and entrepreneur. PressConf was a 10/10 week, and yes, I took more Waymos.
