About This Video

In this one I’m doing something a bit different in the workshop — I’m making custom wooden medals for a competition my club is running next weekend. I’m still getting over a cold (so yeah… I sound a bit funny), but I wanted to show you the whole process of how I’m turning a sheet of 7mm plywood into proper-looking awards: first, second, and third place for each category we’re shooting. I’m using my laser engraver with LightBurn to lay everything out — club name (Sherwood Archery Club), the category, and the placing. I even grabbed a basic medal-style archer graphic by prompting ChatGPT and then tweaked it into the final design. From there it’s a simple workflow: frame the job to make sure the cut area is right, hit start, let it engrave and cut, then deal with the slightly burnt face and edges. Once the blanks are off the bed, I clean them up on my sanding station (quick “zip zip zip”) to get them looking tidy, and the last step is varnish — not in this video, but that’s how they’ll get that finished look. If you want settings, materials, or the workflow details, chuck your questions in the comments and I’ll share what I can. Keep shooting — it’s the only way you’re going to get better.
