In this Weekends With Avrona episode, I break down Microsoft’s sudden reveal of “Xbox Project Helix” and why the timing is… interesting. With big leadership departures and GDC right there, it really feels like Microsoft needed to remind people that Xbox isn’t going anywhere and that next-gen hardware is still happening. Personally, it’s still wild to me that we’re already talking about the next generation when current gen feels like it dropped yesterday—and I’m still not even in the console game right now. Project Helix sounds like a classic “bigger, faster, more features” pitch, but there are a few standout angles: Microsoft sticking with AMD, deeper integration of a next-gen FSR (they’re calling it “FSR Diamond,” which is a naming choice…), and talk of a “next generation of DirectX” which sure sounds like we’re inching toward a DirectX 13 moment. The headline feature, though, is the PC library integration: being able to sign into Steam/Epic/GOG and play that library on an Xbox-like box is genuinely compelling. That said, none of this is an instant “take my money” for me. I’m still waiting for something truly different—bring back Kinect, do VR properly, give me a reason to buy more than a kneecapped x86 PC in a console shell.
