Here I am discussing everything I have or will do to my Thinkpad T440p. I absolutely love this device and hope to tinker with it for years to come. Hope you enjoy the video and please share what you are doing with your Thinkpad in the comments!
About This Video
I’ve been meaning to make this for a while, so I finally sat down and walked through my ThinkPad T440p—what I’ve already modded, what I broke (because I was being an ape), and what I’m still planning to do. Mine was a grade B eBay unit, so the bottom clips were already busted and I ended up super-gluing them back on. I also show the internals: I swapped the stock i5-4300M for an i7-4910MQ, dropped in a beefier heatsink from the Nvidia model (cheap eBay find), and I’m planning an even more ridiculous cooling mod by adding another cooler/heat pipe and cutting plastic for airflow. Storage-wise, I’m using a 1TB SSD in a drive caddy where the DVD drive used to be, and I’m planning to populate the 2242 M.2 SATA slot too.
Up top, I rant about the T440p’s stock “flat” clickpad: it looks modern, but it’s wildly inaccurate and the buttons feel atrocious—so I replaced it with the newer style touchpad that has real buttons. I also upgraded the trash 1366x768 TN panel to a much nicer 1080p display, and I talk about backlit keyboard plans. On the security/tinkering side, I’ve disconnected the fingerprint reader (I think that whole auth method is awful), and I’m prepping a USB‑C PD trigger mod so I can charge the T440p over USB‑C. Long term, I want this thing to be a secure, portable workstation—OpenBSD, coreboot/libreboot goals, and eventually a ridiculous multi-drive storage beast.
