About This Video

This video is basically me crawling back out of my cave after not recording for forever, and then immediately ranting about the one thing that’s been eating all my free time: my ThinkPad T440p running OpenBSD. I’m using OpenBSD 7.7 on it, and honestly it’s been an absolute joy—fast, lightweight, and perfect for the way I use a computer (terminal-heavy, lots of tinkering, minimal fluff). I show pfetch, talk about why this model rules, and why I’m officially sold on ThinkPads now. TrackPoint supremacy. Who needs a mouse? I go through the upgrades I’ve done (and why): swapping the awful stock 768p TN panel for a 1080p matte IPS, replacing the garbage trackpad with the one that has real buttons, dropping in an i7-4910MQ, messing with heatsinks (including using the dGPU model heatsink for extra thermal mass), adding a DVD-bay drive caddy, and grabbing a new battery. All-in, I’m around $330 with shipping/tax, which is stupid cheap compared to modern laptops. I also talk about the real-world limits: heavy JavaScript web apps are pain (Discord is basically unusable), so I’ve been building terminal tools to replace browser workflows—Reddit search + TUIR, git repo search, and my own YouTube fuzzy-finder tool. Next up is more mods, including converting the charger to USB-C PD with trigger modules, because of course I’m going to do that.
