I have had a wonderful time using NixOS lately so I wanted to talk a little more about it and how you can replicate my system. I have begun to use flakes so if you want to read more up on them, you can, here: https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Flakes 🌟 Thank you for watching! About This Video

I haven’t made a video in way too long, so I figured I’d come back by talking about what I’m actually daily-driving right now: NixOS. A bunch of people keep asking me to make “Zaney OS” as a distro, and I’m still not interested in doing that—but the whole point of NixOS (especially with flakes) is that you can basically replicate my setup anyway. In this video I walk through the practical path: installing NixOS, enabling flakes as an experimental feature, and then pulling down my config repo so you can rebuild into the same system I’m using. I show you what’s in my flake setup, how I use Home Manager to generate/symlink my dotfiles, and how my Hyprland desktop is put together (Waybar, theming, wallpapers, and a few scripts like my emoji selector). I’m also using GDM now, including setting up the face image so your login looks right. The big takeaway is reproducibility: you can clone my repo, drop in your own hardware-configuration.nix, change username/hostname if you want, and have my workstation or laptop build in minutes. NixOS is still really good, and the “won’t build when the git repo is dirty” behavior with flakes saves you from a lot of self-inflicted config pain.
