About This Video

I’ve been working on my NixOS flake for a while, and I realized I never really did a single video that just walks you through how to install it and what actually matters. So in this one I break down the whole “replicate my exact system” process for ZaneyOS—without doing a full point-by-point install on camera, because honestly it’s simple once you know the couple of gotchas. I start at the NixOS download page and talk about which ISO you should grab (I generally recommend GNOME for the installer because Plasma/SDDM can be more likely to run into weird hardware issues). The live ISO desktop is just for the installer though—it’s not what you’re stuck with afterward. During install the big thing is: use UEFI with GPT. After you boot into your fresh NixOS install, you hop into a nix-shell with git and vim, clone my GitLab repo, and stay in that folder while you configure. The real key takeaway is that you need to edit options.nix. Set your username/hostname, bar style, git info, theme, terminal choice, and especially the impermanence setting. Mine defaults to true because I run root on tmpfs (RAM) with persistence, but if you’re doing a normal install you should set impermanence to false or you’re gonna have a bad time. Then you run the rebuild command with your hostname and you’re basically done.
