In this video I’m checking out the all-new handwired VOX AC30, and yeah… it’s that timeless British chime and crunch for real. The AC30 story goes all the way back to 1958 as the louder step up from the AC15, and it basically became the soundtrack to the British invasion and beyond—Beatles, Shadows, Brian May, Tom Petty… you get it. I play through a bunch of real-world parts and tones (U2, Queen, Temples, Verve, STP, Jeff Buckley) so you can hear how it sits as a clean platform and how it reacts when you lean into it. This handwired model is based on a 1963 copper panel AC30, and the big takeaway for me is the feel: it’s super touch-sensitive with that natural compression that just feels great under your fingers. It’s fully handwired with custom transformers, runs four EL84s, and pushes 30 watts into two 12" Celestion Alnico Blues—so you get those bell-like highs and layered harmonics. I walk through the Normal channel (midrange warmth, bright switch, and honestly a killer neutral pedal platform) and the Top Boost channel (the quintessential Vox thing—from glassy cleans to edge-of-breakup to ripping crunch). You also get tube-driven spring reverb and a buffered effects loop that’s transparent and bypassable, and the master volume actually sounds great even down at bedroom levels.
