In this video I’m taking a hard look at the SteelSeries Rival 710, and yeah… I’m saying it straight up: stay far away from this one. I actually applaud SteelSeries for trying to innovate, but the 710 is packed with features that sound cool on paper and end up feeling unnecessary in real use. The big one is the OLED screen on the side. Sure, it can show static messages or even supported in-game info, but I’m not taking my eyes off my game to tilt my mouse and read a tiny display. Then you’ve got stuff like the swappable sensor (it already has the TrueMove3 optical, which is great) and even vibration motors you can enable in software. The problem is all these extras drive up the price and add weight—this mouse is about 140g, which is just way too heavy compared to lighter options like the G Pro (83g) or Model O (67g). On top of that, the comfort is rough: the side buttons sit too far forward for my large hands, and the shape feels bad for palm and fingertip grips. Credit where it’s due though—the sensor is incredible and the switches feel fantastic—but overall, if you’re shopping for a gaming mouse, don’t buy the Rival 710.
