Episode 8: Growth State

There are 9 growth states: 1. Unstructured Growth: Founder-led motion driven by individual effort 2. Structured Growth: First teams form and basic processes emerge 3. Accelerated Growth: Additional capacity is added, and growth speeds up 4. Sustainable Growth: Process improvements improve efficiency and cost control 5. Exponential Growth: Resources are directed toward high-leverage areas 6. Compound Growth: Growth begins to create more growth through feedback 7. Durable Growth: Growth continues even as external input is reduced 8. Orchestrated Growth: Multiple loops are deliberately coordinated 9. Autonomous Growth: Growth becomes adaptive, self-reinforcing, and resilient Each growth state reflects a different system behavior. Early states are driven by effort and acceleration. Later states depend on compounding, durability, and orchestration. As companies scale, the rules change. What once produced growth can suddenly destroy it. This is where many leadership teams struggle. They continue to operate the system as if it were in an earlier state, applying tactics that no longer fit the business's underlying behavior. Growth slows, costs rise, and teams work harder for diminishing returns. So what is the role of the management team? If growth is a dynamic state, what is its natural tendency? Like any living system, growth is exposed to entropy. Left unmanaged, it drifts from higher states back to lower ones. Compounding weakens. Loops decay. Growth reverts to effort. That makes the role of executives surprisingly clear. Ensure the company remains in a compound-growth state and does not slip backward. So, what growth state are you in today, and where are you going? Growth states make this visible. By understanding the current state of the system, leaders can see which levers matter, which loops must dominate, and which actions will actually move the system forward. Growth state awareness turns confusion into clarity. This is also where growth governance becomes unavoidable. As velocity increases and systems become more autonomous, leadership must shift from managing outcomes to stewarding system behavior. The role of executives and boards is no longer to push for more growth, but to ensure the system remains in the right state. Growth states bring the entire series together. Laws explain why growth behaves the way it does. Engines and factories show how it is produced. Mechanics and loops explain how it compounds. Planning governs probability. Growth states govern control. Richard Feynman said, “What I cannot create, I do not understand.” Growth is no different. If we do not understand how growth works, how can we expect to create it?
