Hello YouTube land, I’m Eddie, and this one hit different. I typically don’t do voice overs, but riding through the West Kelowna wildfire devastation left me totally speechless and heartbroken—so I put my thoughts together after the fact. In this video I take you on what ended up being my last ride of the season with my buddy Ron, along Westside Road, a scenic stretch beside Okanagan Lake that used to be one of the most beautiful rides in the Central Okanagan. Seeing homes burned to the ground is brutal, but what really crushed me was realizing it’s not “just houses”—it’s people’s hard work, dreams, and memories. Our family home was safe, but a cabin we rented for about 10 years was destroyed, and all that’s left is a wrecked dock and a buoy I placed back in 2008. I also talk about what happened with the 2023 West Kelowna wildfire (the McDougall Creek wildfire), called a “one in 100 years” fire because of its size, intensity, and complexity. Over 10,000 residents were evacuated, and while about 200 structures were destroyed, thousands more were saved by over 500 firefighters battling it from the ground and air. I share some hard stats about B.C.’s record-breaking wildfire season and why I’m honestly infuriated that about 40% of fires are human-caused—because that means they’re preventable. This isn’t about likes and subs; it’s about acknowledging this new reality and working together to mitigate it.
