Hey guys, it’s Kayla Waller with Waller Adventures, and in this one I bundle up and head out for a cold winter magnet fishing run in my hometown of Kinston, North Carolina. It was about 28° out, snowing, and we were out there at night with numb fingers and crunchy gloves—so yeah, winter magnet fishing is a whole different kind of challenge. It had been about two years since I last did this, but I figured it was time to toss the magnets again and see what Kinston’s water was hiding. My dad Jerry came along and we hit a few spots I’ve fished before, starting at the park where one dock was blocked off, then working the open area and the boat ramp. We pulled up a pile of fishing hooks (including treble hooks), a Corona Extra bottle cap, screws, random metal pieces, and a pretty neat lure with a little fish on it. The most “unique” stuff for me was a camo dog leash/collar and a big green metal pole that had me thinking I was snagged on something heavy. We also had a magnet rescue moment at the bridge near Wise Fork—ended up using the good old Tacoma to pull the magnet loose (second time that’s happened). Takeaway: winter conditions don’t stop the finds, but you’ve got to watch ice, low water, and where you throw—because getting stuck is real.
