In this St. Augustine day trip, I start the morning the best way I know how—fishing at Vano Beach Pier with the poles out, calm water, and plenty of bait getting “messed with.” We used freshly dead shrimp and frozen finger mullet cut bait, and even though the bite wasn’t nonstop, we still pulled up some fun stuff: a couple grunts, whiting (including a nice big one), a little sea robin, a small catfish, and Jen even landed a little bonnethead shark. And of course, the pelicans (Fred and Fred Junior) were out there eyeing every fish like it was their personal breakfast order. After the pier, we headed into busy St. Augustine for what I’ll straight-up call the best sandwiches in town—Anne O’Malley’s. I grabbed my turkey club with avocado and Jen went for the BLT, and it hit the spot after fishing. Then we walked St. George Street, checked out some of the shops, spotted the fort, and even swung by the Ghosts of St. Augustine store where we get our ghost hunting gear.
