Genshin Impact. You know it, you’ve heard of it—and I got into it back in late 2020 because I’m a sucker for unnecessarily detailed character designs. In this speedpaint + commentary collab with Sammy (Monster Maniac), we take on a character design challenge: redesigning the Fatui Harbingers with our own twists, fixes, and a little bit of “Hoyo, why did you do that?” energy. We start with my absolute favorite menace, Scaramouche, where I try to keep the iconic OG vibe (especially that red/purple/blue/gray/gold palette that somehow slays) while reworking the outfit, bringing back the ball joints they chickened out on, and giving him an electro-core chest cavity. From there we bully—I mean, redesign—Dottore into something that feels closer to his comic flavor: sharper teeth, one mask (please), more expressive “judging you” energy, and a dapper-but-still-reeks silhouette that fits a mad scientist who’s not exactly winning any morality awards. Then I go full “biblically accurate angel drip” for Columbina with ballet inspiration, wings everywhere, glitter (because yes), and an Anemo pick mostly because the turquoise contrast is too good. Sammy tackles Capitano with a muted, grieving military vibe, big gauntlets (baggy pants supremacy), and a sword for elegance. Finally, I design my own Tsaritsa from scratch: imposing, militaristic, ice literally corrupting her body, and a fantasy-mishmash outfit that still reads cold-region royalty.
