Making art takes time, but sometimes your “style” starts bullying you into spending 20 hours on a drawing you wanted to be quick and fun. In this video I walk through how I simplify my artstyle without losing what makes my characters feel like… my characters. I start by having you dig through your gallery and pick a piece that was supposed to be simple, but spiraled into over-rendering, overly complex lineart, or lost shape language. Then I make you do the annoying little-kid “why?” loop until you hit the real reason (for me it was perfectionism—especially with my favorite OC, Aster, because I’m scared he won’t look cool enough). Once you know the actual issue, I show how I build a reference board: one artist whose work doesn’t have my problem (I used Polluxery because their style is simple-but-effective for comics), plus examples from my own gallery where I accidentally did the “good version” of my style. Then I experiment through low-pressure doodles: giving 50% effort, testing a new brush, and keeping shapes clean instead of fighting every pixel. I also talk about frustration being part of the process, and how paying attention to what annoys you gives you the next step. And yes—plot twist—I end by ignoring my own advice and still making something that slaps, because sometimes you just go with the flow and let the art decide what it wants to be.
