About This Video

Heyo, I’m Will, and in this tutorial I’m answering one of the questions I get nonstop: “What canvas size do you recommend?” The annoying truth is that there isn’t one magic number you can slap on every project—canvas size depends on what you’re making, how you render, and what your device/program can actually handle before it starts lagging (or, y’know, exploding). I break down what canvas size even means in digital art (pixels vs inches/centimeters), why pixels are usually the most practical way to think about quality, and I also touch on the DPI panic people love to have (no, you won’t burn in hell if it’s not 300—more on that in my separate DPI video). Then I get into the real decision-making: lineart vs painterly work, simple vs super detailed pieces, and how all of that changes what “big enough” actually is. Lineart tends to pixelate faster, so I generally recommend not going below 2K on either side, and for full bodies I like at least ~2.5K height. I share my personal go-to sizes (like 2800x2400 for general work, 3200x2800 for character sheets, 4.5K+ for splash art, and even 7K+ for VTuber models), plus common mistakes—like resizing after you already finished lineart and wondering why it turns to mush. When in doubt, go bigger (within your hardware limits), because scaling down is easy and scaling up is pain.
