About This Video

One of the most important things when drawing characters is their face and expression—and I’m not even being dramatic. I’ve seen (and made) pieces where the face is so strong you don’t notice the mistakes or unrendered parts until someone points them out. In this tutorial I break down how I get exaggerated expressions that still feel believable: how the mouth, eyes, and brows each change the vibe, and how even swapping just one feature can completely flip the emotion. I also talk about keeping a character recognizable while you push expressions, because yeah… that part is legit hard, and sometimes it takes a few tries. Then I get into references—your best bet, partner in crime, and solution to most of your issues. I show how I organize expression refs (real people + character art) so you can compare quickly, take notes on what makes the character “them,” and fix problems like “why does this smile look fake?” without guessing. After that, we go full nerd mode on creases (one of my absolute favorite things to add): where they actually belong, how to shade them so your character doesn’t randomly look 40, and which creases make angry/sneer expressions look feral in the best way. I also cover side-view expressions, teeth/gums, nose movement, iris/pupil tricks (“bastard core”), and a few practice exercises—including a randomized dice/table method.
