About This Video

In this video I tested Captify’s AI smart glasses, and the main goal here is simple but massive: bringing live subtitles to real-life conversations for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. With hearing loss predicted to affect 700 million people by 2050 (and around 18 million in the UK alone), I really like the idea of being able to “bring your own subtitles” anywhere—because subtitles aren’t available everywhere in the real world like they are on streaming platforms. I go through the key features: on-glasses captioning that can work remotely (without needing your phone/internet), plus translations and notifications (these do need a phone with internet). The glasses charge via USB-C, take around 40 minutes to fully charge, and Captify claims 48 hours standby and about 4 hours of captioning. I also show how easy the controls are—button, swipe, tap—and talk honestly about the design: most of the time they look pretty normal, but at certain angles you can spot the “squares” and even the projection. My takeaway: captioning works really well, only missing the odd word. Notifications (especially WhatsApp) are genuinely useful and discreet. Translation is okay but can struggle with fast speech or background noise, so it’s not quite there yet—but I can see it getting better, and there’s a Pro version coming soon that should be faster, support more languages, and have a slightly different design.
