About This Video

In this video I’m reviewing the Xiaomi Watch 5, and on paper this thing is kind of a beast for the money. It’s sitting around £270, and you’re getting a massive 1.54-inch AMOLED display that hits 1,500 nits, sapphire glass on the front and even on the back over the sensors, plus Wear OS so you can download proper apps. The big headline for me is the battery: it’s a 930mAh silicon-carbon battery (like what we’re starting to see in phones), and that’s why it can push up to six days, or around four days with always-on display. I also push the features to the limit, including the camera control and screen mirroring. That’s what gave me the idea to aim my phone at my monitor, load up Fortnite, and basically “play” it from the watch screen. It works… but it’s also pretty ridiculous because, yeah, it’s still a tiny screen for gaming. On top of that, the gesture controls are genuinely mind-blowing at this price—pinch twice to reject calls or snooze alarms, rub fingers to stop an alarm, and more. It’s not perfect though. My first-time pairing experience was absolutely painful (even with a Xiaomi phone), and while the GPS tracking is some of the best I’ve seen, I don’t fully trust the accuracy of sleep tracking and step counts. If you’re hardcore about fitness stats, I’d be cautious, but if you want Wear OS functionality, loads of features, and insane value for £270, this is a really compelling smartwatch.
