In this video I dug into the backlash around Apple’s iPhone 17 range (17, 17 Pro and Air) and why the internet’s been so negative after the launch event. One of the big stories doing the rounds is Apple stock dipping after the reveal, but historically that’s pretty normal—investors often get twitchy around new releases and it tends to recover after a few weeks. So that part doesn’t automatically mean the iPhone 17 is “bad”, it’s just how the cycle goes. I also looked at the design criticism. Apple doesn’t really change the look year-on-year, and I’m not actually against that because the iPhone has a “look” people buy into. But let’s be honest: the 14, 15 and 16 are basically identical, and the 17 still feels very much the same even if it’s slightly different. Then there’s the “new” features that aren’t really new—adaptive refresh rate finally hitting the base models, dual camera recording (main + selfie at the same time), and all cameras moving to 48MP. These are new to Apple, not new to the market, and that’s where a lot of the heat comes from. The funniest one for me is Apple going all-in on titanium marketing for the 15/16, then backtracking to aluminium now and calling it a thermal/performance win. Some backlash is made up, some is fair—but overall I still think the iPhone 17 could be a solid step forward, and I want Apple vs Android to keep pushing everyone forward for us consumers.
