Andy and Jacob spent the day down the road helping a friend run his old circle mill. They milled up a good pile of lumber that will eventually go on the siding of our new barn. There’s just something special about seeing a log turned into boards the old-timey way. While the boys were at the mill, I stayed here on the farm. The morning started with milking the cow, and then I came in the house and put that milk to work. Today I made homemade cream cheese and churned up some fresh butter. We sure do appreciate y’all coming along with us. About This Video

This one’s a good old mix of hard work and home comforts. The day started early with Andy and Jacob heading down the road to Thomasville, North Carolina to help our friends at Rocky Ridge run their old circle mill. There’s just something special about watching a log turn into boards the old-timey way—those saws will get her done. We hauled the dump truck and trailer down there with plans to come home with a big pile of lumber, and we sure did. Most of what we cut is going to be siding for our new barn, and I’ll tell you, seeing that poplar stacked up makes me so excited I could cry thinking about how pretty that board-and-batten look is going to be. While the boys were sawmilling, I stayed here on the farm with Miss Maggie Moo and got after the morning routine—feeding, letting the chickens out, and milking Candy. I showed how I use a kick bar as a safety precaution, why I make sure to get that hind milk for the cream, and the steps I always do after milking to keep her udder healthy. Then I put that fresh milk to work: I made a soft, homemade “cream cheese” and later churned butter fast in my food processor. Fresh dairy don’t last forever, so I try to use it up, freeze what I can, and keep learning new old-time skills right here at home.
