This morning started out in the cow pasture with milking and checking on our sweet new calves. There’s just something about that quiet time out there that brings a little peace to the soul. After chores, Andy spent time spraying dormant spray on the apple trees, we’re really hoping and praying for a good harvest this year. There’s nothing quite like gathering apples from trees that have been cared for year after year. Later on, Andy put the hydraulic cylinder back on the old Ford tractor, and he and Jacob did a little mechanic work on Jacob’s old lawnmower. I sure do love watching those boys learn and work together. We ended the day down by the creek with Maggie doing a little target practice. Thank y’all for being here with us and sharing in these beautiful days. #homesteadlife #farmfamily #appalachianhomestead #simpleliving #milkingacow

About This Video

This video starts the way a lot of my mornings do—down in the cow pasture, milking Candy before school gets going. She’s getting back in her routine and doing better every day, even if she still don’t want to walk up the hill, so I’m fixing to go fetch her more often. I give y’all a quick calf update too: both new calves are little bulls, wide open and full of life, and Candy is a helicopter mama about it. That’s just the cycle of it all—those boys will get banded soon and, in time, they’ll be our beef. After that, I tackle something new for me: spraying dormant spray on the orchard. I explain why I’m okay with a little preventative spraying when it’s necessary, especially since we’ve had insect issues and fire blight trouble. I walk through how I mixed it, why I chose a calm day above 40°, and the importance of soaking the branches. Then we shift into repairs—getting a rebuilt hydraulic cylinder and new hoses back on the old Ford 545, checking for leaks, and talking about what makes that tractor unique. We finish out with Jacob wrenching on his old Ford lawnmower, and Maggie down at the creek garden doing a little .22 practice—she’s hooked on hunting, and honestly, she reminds me of me.
