Today I spent some time in the kitchen using our fresh milk, turning cream into homemade butter and making a batch of ice cream. We spent part of the day spreading fertilizer, grinding feed for the cows, and hauling manure to spread out on the pasture. There’s always something to be done this time of year to keep the farm going. But like most farm days… things don’t always go exactly as planned. Andy accidentally left the gate open and before long the cows decided they’d go on a little adventure of their own. Just another reminder that life on the farm keeps you on your toes. We sure appreciate you spending a little time with us today and being part of our True Grit family. ❤️ Meagans Ice Cream Maker https://amzn.to/47Kccxs Ice Cream Container https://amzn.to/4s72DRk If youd like to visit our website you can find it here https://truegritappalachianways.com Chocolate Ice Cream Recipe (makes about 1-2 quarts) 2 cups heavy cream 2 cups milk 4 egg yolks 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 tsp salt vanilla 1 cup chocolate chips, melted (I used half semi sweet and half milk chocolate) Combine egg yolks and sugar. About This Video

Hey y’all, it’s Megan, and this video is one of them “little bit of this and that and the other” kind of farm days—except it’s all for the cows. I started out in the kitchen working my way through all this wonderful fresh milk. I scraped that thick cream right off the top (yes, with my little $2 ladle—no cream separator needed when God separates it for me), then made homemade butter and a batch of chocolate ice cream. Fresh milk just does something special to ice cream—you can’t beat it. I use melted chocolate chips instead of cocoa, because it makes it like chocolate chunk ice cream with little pieces all through it, and it’s about the best thing since sliced bread. After that, it was back to farm work: fertilizing pastures, grinding feed, and trying to get manure hauled and spread before a chance of rain. We talked pasture management, giving our own ground a break by using the neighbor’s pasture again, and why I don’t want cows on that early green-up until it’s at least ankle deep. And because it’s real life out here, we had a little excitement—Andy got in a hurry, left a gate open, and the cows decided to go on an adventure. Thank goodness they’re bucket-trained, because farm days don’t always go as planned, and cows will keep you on your toes.
