Don’t Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch || Pole Beans, Black-eyed Peas & Grapes || August 2025

A late summer harvest in the Appalachian hills brings plenty of good food and a few signs that the season is about to change. Andy and I gather fresh pole beans, black eyed peas, and sweet grapes from our homestead garden, then walk down to the creek garden to check its progress. Along the way, we spot the first signs of fall. Back home, we end the day the old-fashioned way — sitting on the back porch, stringing beans by hand, just as our families have done for generations.
