There’s just something about getting your hands dirty that chases away the wintertime blues. Today Meagan and Andy spend the morning doing a little garden cleanup around the homestead, dreaming of warmer days and fresh harvests to come. After that, they head down to Berry Hill to tackle a long-neglected blackberry patch that’s grown into quite the jungle over the past couple years. A little hard work, a lot of hope, and always looking forward to what the next growing season will bring. About This Video

This nice warm February day had me and Megan out there daydreaming about garden time, and honestly it felt plum good. We started off doing a little cleanup and having one of them “serious discussions” about changing things up this year—English peas late February (that’s our sweet spot), moving tomatoes out of the main garden because of last year’s disease, and trying tomatoes in raised beds now that we’ve got irrigation. We talked through crop rotation, succession corn planting, making room for cucumbers (I need pickles this year), and why I’m not wasting prime garden space on squash and zucchini when a couple plants will do just fine somewhere else. Then we went and tackled the big job: our thornless blackberry patch over at Berry Hill that had turned into a full-blown jungle. If you don’t stay on blackberries, they’ll absolutely take over—sending runners, bending canes down to root, and spreading 10+ feet from where you ever intended. We pulled dead canes, dug and yanked plants, and got it back to two rows so you can finally walk through it again. Biggest takeaway? Keep berries maintained, mulch beats “strawberries as ground cover” for us, and sometimes hard work really is the cure for the wintertime blues.
