Arctic cod fishing in Northern Norway does not get more raw than this. Big waves, freezing cold, and one of the most unique fisheries in the world, the skrei season in Finnmark, fished by Norwegian fishermen the traditional way with nets. We shipped the boat all the way from the west coast of Norway up to the Arctic (Barents Sea), near the North Cape where Norway borders Russia and Finland. Almost nothing went to plan. The boats took damage at sea, the weather landlocked us in Myre with waves up to seven meters, and we had to push even further north than we ever intended. This is day one of fishing in Finnmark, pulling nets full of cod in heavy Arctic seas, sorting the catch, and bringing it in to sell. Skrei is a type of Arctic cod that migrates down to the Norwegian coast every winter, and fishermen travel from all over the country to fish for it. It is cold, hard, beautiful work, and this trip had it all: big seas, real action on deck, stunning Arctic scenery, and a fishery you will not see anywhere else on earth. This is part one of a four part Arctic series following the whole trip from start to finish. New episodes coming over the next few weeks. Filmed in Finnmark, Northern Norway.
