The midnite Solar Surge Protection Device is designed to clamp down high voltage and send it to ground so that your expensive equipment is not damaged. This is the Midnite Solar SPD 600v unit. Installation of the surge protection device is easy. You simply need to connect the red wire to the positive of your solar, black wire to the negative solar wire, and lastly the green wire goes to earth ground. The Blue LED's indicate that the unit is working properly. The threads on the unit are 1/2". I purchased this surge protector on Amazon here https://amzn.to/40yI0Qn You can also find it here: https://www.midnitesolar.com/productPhoto.php?product_ID=285&productCat_ID=23&sortOrder=3&act=p If you have a product that you would like to submit for video review please contact me by email here: toolstechandgear@gmail.com Amazon links are through the affiliate program.

About This Video

In this install video, I’m working with the MidNite Solar SPD (Surge Protection Device), specifically the SPD 600V unit. The whole job of this thing is simple: if you get a surge or lightning event, it clamps that high voltage and sends it to ground so you’re not smoking expensive gear like your inverter and MPPT charge controller. I walk through what the three leads do (green = ground, black = negative, red = positive) and how I’m tying it into my solar wiring in a small breaker box. I show my exact wiring layout: solar coming in from outside into the bottom of my DC breaker, wires out the top going to the inverter, and the SPD landed right alongside those connections. The big takeaway is to keep the wiring as short as possible, especially the ground, so I trim the green lead down and tie it into my existing earth ground. Once everything is buttoned up, I flip the breaker and check the blue status LEDs to confirm the SPD is working. For around $110, it’s a solid piece of protection that can save you from a really bad day, and in some areas it may even be required.
