The JIS screw driver stands for Japanese Industrial Standard. Often Asian products will use a screw that does not work well with the American Phillips head screw driver. These Asian screws need a driver with less taper and point. About This Video

In this video I break down why I kept stripping screws on a product from China while using a regular Phillips head screwdriver—and what finally fixed it. A subscriber of mine, Workbench Z (link in the description), sent me a set of JIS screwdrivers. JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standard, and these drivers are made for the type of screws you’ll often find on gear from Japan and China. I show the physical differences side-by-side: the Phillips has a sharper point and more taper, while the JIS tip is blunter with straighter edges. That shape matters because a Phillips is designed to cam out (round out of the screw) at a certain torque, which is exactly how you end up chewing up those “Asian hardware” screws. With the JIS driver, it locks down tight in the screw head and backs the screws out smooth and easy. Bottom line: having the right tool for the job makes a big difference, and if you work on imported tools, tech, or equipment, a JIS set is a must-have in the drawer.
