After my 17-year-old car got smushed by a flatbed truck, I picked up a Toyota Tacoma and I’m trying to keep this one nice for as long as I can. In this video I install Dickies seat covers from Walmart—two covers for the front seats and a one-piece cover for the rear. The big goal here is simple: protect the seats from real life, especially kids and the inevitable goldfish and gummies getting mashed into the fabric. I start with the rear cover, which is designed to work with the Tacoma’s headrests and has straps plus bungee/elastic hold-downs underneath. It also has flaps so the seat belt buckles can pop through, which is a must since I’m putting car seats back there. One thing I noticed: the middle seat belt basically becomes unusable with this cover on, so if I need that seat belt I’d probably have to pull the cover out temporarily. Up front, the Dickies “wetsuit” style covers fit better than I expected. The headrest covers slip on easily, the back panel stretches over the seat, and there’s a foam roller/fabric piece you stuff into the seat crease to help keep it from sliding. After a couple test sits, the material was tacky enough that it stayed put and I could still access the seat adjust handle.
