About This Video

After the Deland train show, I do what I always tell folks to do—go see an operating layout while you’re already in “train mode.” In this video I head over to the Volusia County Model Railroad Club layout in the barn. You can actually see the barn from outside, and during the show you get to go inside and check out all the good stuff up close. We’ve been walking around for a few hours (Debbie was taking a breather), but it’s worth it because you get real inspiration watching trains run on a big club setup. While I’m there, I end up talking trains and sharing some practical thoughts—like how certain systems handle reversing and why DC and DCC can “care” about things like reverse loops. I also chat about scale and why kids love the bigger stuff, because my granddaughter already has the controllers figured out and she’s having a blast with all the functions. There’s also a cool walk-through area that’s been closed for a couple years and is finally open again, packed with vintage items that took me right back to when I was a kid. We wrap up with a quick bite (chopped brisket sandwich) and head home—full of ideas and motivation to get back to laying track and building.
