In this video, I walk you through how I teach math to ESL learners—because it’s always two-fold: you’re teaching math content and you’re teaching language at the same time. I focus on what really trips students up: math word problems. A lot of the “math difficulty” is actually English difficulty, so I show you how to help students break down the text, identify what the problem is asking, and connect the language to the operation they need. I also explain why modeling metacognitive skills matters so much with ELLs, especially in middle school and high school. When I explicitly model how I think through a word problem—what I underline, what I ignore, what I restate in my own words—students start to internalize that process. My goal is to give you practical, repeatable strategies you can use with teens (and younger students too) so they can approach word problems with confidence and multiple tools, not just guess-and-check.
