About This Video

In this video, I share one of my go-to ways to get teens talking without the usual pressure: turning speaking practice into a game. I highlight the classic “Guess Who” board game and show you how I adapt it specifically for ESL teens so they’re practicing real questions, descriptions, and follow-up language—without feeling like they’re being put on the spot. Speaking can be nerve-wracking for teenagers, so I like activities that feel playful but still build vocabulary, sentence structure, fluency, and grammar. I also point you to a simple “question helper” worksheet (Teachers Pay Teachers) that supports students who get stuck on how to form questions, and I share a free version created by Julia (Julia_ESL_Teacher) that you can print and use if you don’t have the board game. If you’re building your classroom game library, I include additional ESL-friendly games and speaking resources I’ve used to keep teens engaged while they practice meaningful language. The big takeaway: the right game structure lowers anxiety and raises the amount of authentic speaking your students actually do.
