About This Video

If you’re thinking about upgrading your cartridge but you’re still running a built-in phono preamp in your turntable, amp, or receiver, I want you to pause for a second. In this video I walk through why an external phono stage very often makes a bigger, more obvious improvement than swapping cartridges—especially if the “phono stage” you’re using is basically a tiny chip tucked inside a box that’s doing other jobs (and dealing with heat, noise, and power contamination). I share my own path: for years I chose convenience, then I tried an external phono stage (the U-Turn Pluto 2) and immediately heard more “meat,” like going from small speakers to larger ones. I explain what a phono stage really does—gain plus equalization—and why any imperfection gets amplified. The payoff is what audiophiles call a “blacker background” (you don’t hear hiss or buzz), and that quieter floor can actually reveal the benefits of a cartridge upgrade. I also tell the story of moving from an Ortofon Red to a Blue and not truly hearing it until the external phono stage unlocked it. I finish with practical budget guidance: if your table is $250–$500, spending about $150–$200 on a phono stage can be the sweet spot; if you’re in the $500–$1,000 range, something like the Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 can be a great step (and a gateway into tubes). And if you’re happy with your built-in, that’s valid too—this isn’t a necessity, just a really solid upgrade path.
