The terms "soundstage" and "imaging" when describing sound reproduction are overused and losing their power. What are they actually? About This Video

Soundstage and imaging are two of those audiophile words I’ve used (and overused) so much that they’ve started to lose their meaning. In this video I go back to basics and try to put real definitions behind the shorthand. I start with soundstage: think of sitting in the Village Vanguard in the early ’60s. Even with your eyes closed, you can sense the room—its width, depth, maybe even height—just from the clink of glasses, a cough, or a cymbal tap. In our listening rooms, soundstage is that sense of space the music occupies in front of you, when it feels like you’re hearing a performance, not just two speakers. Then I separate that from imaging, which is more about specificity. I use Jazz at the Pawn Shop as the classic example: within the soundstage “canvas,” imaging is the ability to point to the exact location of a voice, an instrument, or even a chair moving—like objects in a photograph. The big takeaway is this: your system doesn’t invent soundstage and imaging out of thin air; it reveals what’s already in the recording. If you’re chasing “wider is better” no matter what’s on the record, you might actually be chasing distortion. And if a record sounds flat or unfocused, don’t immediately start moving speakers—pull out a familiar reference record and check what’s really going on.
