About This Video

Whenever I talk about entry-level vinyl setups, I usually point people to something simple: a turntable like the AT-LP60 and a pair of powered speakers from brands like Edifier or Kanto. But I realized I’ve never really explained the difference between active (powered) and passive speakers—and that’s a big deal, because the “right” choice depends on where you are in your journey and what you value. In this video I break it down in plain English. Powered speakers have the amp built in, sometimes even a phono stage, so you plug them in and you’re listening the same day—no overthinking, less gear, less space, and the manufacturer has matched the amp to the drivers for efficiency. Passive speakers need an external amp (and usually a phono stage), which means more boxes and cables—but also more choice. That’s the tradeoff: passive systems let you swap components, tune the sound, and grow over time. I’m a tube guy, and rolling tubes literally changed the voice of my system—something I couldn’t do if the amp was locked inside the speaker. I also talk about a rarely mentioned issue with powered speakers: transformer interference if your turntable sits too close. Bottom line: buy what supports where you are now, and don’t let anyone else make the decision for you.
