About This Video

Dust. I hate it. And if you’ve been in this hobby long enough, you already know the frustrating part: you can be obsessive about cleaning and you’ll still see lint, white specks, and mystery “stuff” mocking you from the record surface. In this video I’m talking about the hidden enemy that makes that happen—static—and why it’s basically the never-ending battle that comes with playing vinyl. I keep the science quick, but the idea matters: PVC (polyvinyl chloride) loves stealing electrons, so your record builds a negative charge from sleeves, mats, even your fingers. That negative charge attracts positively charged dust in the air, and it doesn’t just sit on top—it works into the groove. Then I lay out what I call my hierarchy of static removal: control humidity first (40–50% is the sweet spot), ditch paper inner sleeves for HDPE anti-static sleeves, use a carbon fiber brush with an actual grounding path (skin contact matters), and if you need the extra help—especially in dry winters like mine in New Hampshire—use a Zerostat gun. I also touch on platter mats (felt is the worst) and why I’m cautious about anti-static sprays that can leave residue and potentially coat your stylus.
