I tested the Royal Kludge RK C87 and I’m honestly having a better time with it than I expected—because at first glance it feels more office-oriented than “gamer.” But once I actually started using it, the responsiveness for gaming is legit. It’s a compact 75% layout, so you keep the keys you actually use (and yes, you still get dedicated arrow keys), while freeing up desk space for mouse movement and a cleaner setup. For performance, the Hall Effect rapid trigger switches are the big story. My inputs register cleanly, even in more complex moments in-game, and it keeps up when I’m typing fast for work too. I also like that you can adjust actuation, so you can make it super sensitive for gaming or dial it back if you tend to accidentally tap keys. On top of that, it’s hot-swappable, you can swap keycaps, tweak RGB, and set up macros—so it works great out of the box, but it also gives you room to tinker. It’s not perfect though. I miss a numpad for daily work, and I didn’t expect to miss a dedicated volume knob as much as I do. Still, if you don’t care about those extras and you want something compact that doesn’t scream “gamer” but performs like one, the RK C87 is a really solid pick.
