About This Video

In this video I do a proper catch-up on the £19 HP office PC I bought off eBay (a HP ProDesk G1 400) and show how far you can actually take something like this with the right upgrades. The original setup was an i5-4570, 8GB DDR3 and Intel HD 4600, which was “okay” for Xbox 360-era stuff at 720p, but it absolutely fell apart in modern games (Stray was basically a slideshow). The point here is simple: you don’t need a brand-new build to get back into PC gaming when parts prices are all over the place. I swap the CPU to an i7-4790 (because the 4790K premium is just not worth it if you’re not overclocking), bump the RAM up to 16GB, and then go a bit wild with an RX 6700 10GB. To make that work properly I ditch the ancient 300W HP PSU for a DeepCool 650W modular unit, which also helps airflow in this tight case. I also move from Windows 10 to CachyOS (Arch-based) and show how easy it is to install the gaming packages and get Steam/Lutris/Heroic ready. Then I test Stray in 1080p and show the real-world results: high settings can run, but the CPU holds the GPU back, so a couple of tweaks (and using tools like FSR/frame generation where it makes sense) are what turn this into a genuinely playable budget gaming machine.
