This one was a proper budget PC gaming special because the system was completely free — I literally pulled this Lenovo ThinkCentre office PC out of a dumpster (or a skip, if you’re in the UK). It’s beaten up with dents and a broken front panel, but the damage looked mostly superficial, so I bent the back panel out a bit to avoid any shorts and then chucked it on the bench to answer the big question: will it even boot? Thankfully it fired straight up, got into the Lenovo BIOS, and it turned out to be better than I expected: an Intel Core i5-3470S (65W), 4GB DDR3, and a 240/250GB Kingston SATA SSD, all running on Intel HD 2500 graphics and a tiny 180W PSU. I installed Windows 10 Pro just to test things (not something I’d recommend going for anymore, but it works fine here) and then tried some realistic “what can we actually play?” games. Half-Life 2 ran great once I ditched anti-aliasing, and even the old Star Wars Battlefront held up at a playable level depending on what you’re looking at. Where this sort of machine really makes sense is older titles and emulation. I tested DuckStation with Crash Bandicoot rendered up to 1080p and it looked brilliant, which shows these old office PCs can still be turned into something genuinely fun — even if the case looks a bit trashy right now.
