Upgrading older PCs to keep them going seems to be the way many are saving at the moment and it can work for most but can a cheap CPU and RAM upgrade on our Dumpster PC make any difference at all? About This Video

In this video I’m carrying on with my little dumpster PC project — the one I pulled out of a skip, “remastered” with a GTX 1050 Ti and a bit more RAM, and then tried to game on. It was okay… but there was clearly more we could do. So I went as cheap as possible and swapped the i5 3470S (4C/4T) for an i7 3770 (4C/8T) and doubled the memory from 8GB to 16GB DDR3, just to see if it actually changes anything in real games. I also tidied the build properly this time: repinned and hooked up the full front I/O so it works with the Lenovo board, did some cable management (not much space in this case), and added a front 120mm fan. Testing shows the big wins are mostly in 1% lows and stutter reduction, especially in more CPU-bound or “streamy” games. Spider-Man Remastered improves from a nasty 12 FPS 1% low to around 20 on low settings, and with FSR3 you can push it into the 40–50 FPS range if you’re willing to sacrifice image quality. But in GPU-bound titles, the upgrade barely moves the average FPS — it just smooths things out a bit. My takeaway: if you’re keeping a system like this longer-term (or planning a GPU upgrade), the i7 + 16GB is a solid, cheap foundation… but the 180W PSU is the next problem to solve.
