South Asians have a four times greater risk of heart disease than the general population. 25% of heart attacks occur under age 40 for young south Asians, and 50% occur under age 50. Rajesh Dash, MD, PhD, an expert in cardiovascular medicine, ventures into the complex landscape of heart disease risk among high-risk South Asian patients. Dr. Dash discusses the unique challenges and promising opportunities entwined with mitigating heart disease risk in this vulnerable population. Dr. Dash is an Associate Professor and preventive cardiologist at Stanford Medical School and is Co-Founder and Chairman of HealthPals, Inc. He has innovated in the preventive care delivery space, launching Stanford’s first combined medical/lifestyle telemedicine program, CardioClick, that has virtualized the follow up care of SSATHI patients, and which has resulted in dramatic improvements in patient engagement, medication adherence, and clinical outcomes.
